My head was perfectly placed on my Tempur-Pedic pillow and I was just about engaged in the bliss that comes with sleep. “Mommy…!” Wyatt cried. This really is nothing new; we have been doing this song and dance for just about 7 years now. However, to my surprise my husband rolled out of bed to see what the matter was. “Kaite..!” Aaron cried. Knowing this couldn’t be good, I dashed to Wyatt’s room to find my sick babe drenched in vomit! How quickly a sound night’s sleep is replaced with: stripping the bed, endless loads of laundry, setting up shop in the spare room-complete with vomit bowl, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, Kleenex, trash can and finally the beloved ice chips. Thankfully Aaron and I have this routine down to a science. We have had lots of practice.
As I lain awake, I am always reminded how blessed I really am. The untold hero’s of illness are the single parents in the world, patiently trying to care for their loved ones, while flying solo-I truly can’t fathom. The thought of courageous children lying in hospitals, as they are nursed back to health, is literally enough to make me silently pray for their bravery and healing. And then my mind immediately races to the billions of people who don’t have the basic ability (among other things) to get well. CLEAN WATER. PROPER SANITATION.FOOD.MEDICINE. It really is too much for my heart. If I am to be honest, I really rather not think about it. It is messy-literally. But I do. I lay awake and pray for the billions…BILLIONS. This is what clouds my mind in the wee hours of the morning while I care for my boy. Do my prayers matter?
